On the 1st and 2nd of March 2025, the Gaelic Woodland Project are hosting a two-day Meitheal at Lisnavagh House, in celebration of Seachtain na Gaeilge, blending community action, cultural tradition, and ecological restoration.

This event will be conducted entirely through Irish (no need for fluency in Irish and there will be tanslations all through the day), creating a space to connect with our language while actively working to protect our natural heritage. The Meitheal will involve the removal of Cherry Laurel, an invasive species, to restore biodiversity in the area.

Participants will also take part in a biodiversity walk, where they will learn the names of Ireland’s native plant species in Irish, deepening their connection to the language, the land and and its rich ecological tapestry.

To celebrate Imbolg, a season symbolizing renewal and growth, we will sow native wildflower seeds over the areas cleared of Cherry Laurel. The event will culminate with a wildflower céilí, held on the newly sown ground, featuring traditional Irish music, dance, and a joyful celebration of community and nature.

This Meitheal is an opportunity to reconnect with our cultural and ecological roots while making a meaningful impact on the environment.

Meitheal Mhárta - Seachtain na Gaeilge

Tá áthas orainn a fhógairt go mbeidh muid ag chuir ar siúl Meitheal dhá lá i dTeach Lisnavagh, eastát ón 19ú haois i gContae Cheatharlach, ar an 1ú agus an 2ú Márta 2025, mar chuid de cheiliúradh ar Sheachtain na Gaeilge. Beidh an ócáid seo ar siúl go hiomlán trí Ghaeilge, ag cruthú spáis chun nascadh lenár dteanga agus muid ag obair chun ár n-oidhreacht nádúrtha a chosaint. Mar chuid den Mheitheal, bainfimid crainn Cherry Laurel, speiceas ionrach, chun bithéagsúlacht na háite a athbhunú. Beidh siúlóid bithéagsúlachta mar chuid den chlár freisin, áit a bhfoghlaimid ainmneacha plandaí dúchasacha na hÉireann trí Ghaeilge, ag neartú an nasc leis an teanga, an tír agus a héiceachóras saibhir.

Chun Imbolg, séasúr athnuachana agus fáis, a cheiliúradh, déanfaimid síolta bláthanna fiáine dúchasacha a chur sa spás a ghlanfaimid ó Cherry Laurel. Críochnóimid an ócáid le céilí, a bheidh ar siúl ar an talamh nuaphlántáilte, le ceol traidisiúnta, damhsa agus ceiliúradh. Is deis í an Mheitheal seo chun athcheangal a dhéanamh lenár bhfréamhacha cultúrtha agus éiceolaíochta agus tionchar dearfach a imirt ar an gcomhshaol.

Gaelic Woodland Project

We are a registered charity (RCN: 20206178) led by dedicated, skill-sharing volunteers. Our mission is to conserve Ireland’s natural and cultural heritage and to create an ecologically rich and diverse patchwork of native habitats across Ireland. Founded by Eoghan Connaughton, we achieved official charity status in 2022 and are proud to be listed in the Charities Register.

In 2024, we acquired 12 acres of land in County Mayo, which will be rewilded with native Irish trees following best practices to support biodiversity and ecosystem restoration. We also tackle invasive species by turning them into biofuel as a sustainable alternative to peat, combining ecological restoration with innovative solutions.

Education and advocacy are central to our work. We deliver lectures on environmental issues affecting Ireland, produce educational content, and advocate for legislative changes to better protect our environment. Additionally, we are deeply committed to linking ecological conservation with cultural conservation. As an organisation with Gaeilgeoirí on our board of directors, we ensure that the Irish language has a vital place in all that we do. We host meitheals(community workdays) and create content as Gaeilge, weaving cultural heritage into our ecological mission.

We believe in the power of communities to drive change. Our meitheals aim to foster collaboration and unite people in the service of Irish ecology. Looking ahead, we hope to establish an outdoor learning hub where environmental passion can be turned into action, inspiring and empowering individuals to make a tangible difference.
